this is a post where i just meditate on codependent relationships in fiction i like, esp about abe. it’s got too many references to mean much i just want to talk about my abe feelings…
i saw someone compare abe to asriel back when ut was first released and it made me laugh but it also stabbed me in the heart.
that being said, hm, it’s interesting. because like a lisa / chara / gon type he exerts more control in the relationship. he’s the one ‘who wants to be relied on’, and in fact… NEEDS to be relied on. but i’d be hesitant to have him fill that role of those other characters. so why is he more of an asriel type to me…?
well. mihashi is no chara, or lisa. or even gon. foundationally, he looks for guidance. much like asriel. needs to be needed, needs to rely on someone, WANTS to rely on someone, wants the other person to know he is relying on them.
I’d say the reason abe is more asriel/killua/buzzo-like in his codependence is just his sheer amount of reliance on mihashi as a foundation for him. ‘supposed to be their light’ and that’s abe’s goal too. even if he gets frustrated (a lot of the time because he doesn’t UNDERSTAND) he wants to raise mihashi up. even though he doesn’t express it enough, he actually has a lot of confidence in mihashi’s abilities and just thinks mihashi’s skill is a given. although he’s a little aware of it, he’s not quite aware of the depths of mihashi’s self flagellation and he’s also just in the beginning process of gathering the tools to be able to help. i think it’s because well. he Wants to Be of Use to mihashi.
luckily for abe, mihashi wants to be Of Use to him as well. reciprocal! unfortunately. mihashi’s thoughts regarding being of use are super negative and he attributes everything good to abe.
interestingly, even though mihashi is very concerned about abe’s advice and living up to abe’s expectations and abe in general, you don’t get the sense that mihashi is the one who is as obsessed or depends on abe as much. the truth is, abe is the one who is always thinking of mihashi (and uh, baseball. which ties back into the mihashi thing).
mihashi has friends, mihashi has more going on. he’s building up multiple relationships. in general he’s basking in the newfound love of a team who he thinks he can truly be a part of.
abe… what’s he doing. well. probably thinking of either baseball or mihashi. in fact he’s the one who’s existence rotates on mihashi’s although he keeps track of mihashi for a semblance of control. ultimately, he’s the one who’s focused on mihashi as his core though.
that’s not even getting into their later development.
