Something I love about Hunter X Hunter is that Gon’s determination is NOT portrayed as his best feature. It’s his flaw.
In most shonen, the protagonist never gives up and that’s how he wins (along with the power of friendship). It’s seen as admirable, something that viewers should strive for.
But in HxH, that refusal to give up is terrifying. Gon goes past his limits and hurts himself and others in the process. It gets to a point where you don’t want him to win anymore, if this is what winning means. You take one look at Gon, and you think, “He needs to stop. This isn’t healthy.” And even when he does win, it’s bittersweet. You aren’t left with the high of a power fantasy. You’re left with concern for this small child who is continually destroying himself, over and over.
#its not as much a flaw as a natural character trait that is not suitable for his situation

Chances are there was some sort of ‘failsafe’ with Shido regarding Akechi.
If he were to admit anything, not only would Shido spin anything and everything away from himself, Akechi would… be killed. Having him testify to his own guilt also means incriminating Shido, and then there’s his blood connection to think about- his status as a living scandal, which Shido is already half-cognisant about.
The police are Shido’s bitches, it’s why he was able to organise a police station assassination in the first place. Akechi admits anything, he dies.
I thought that was a pretty obvious point when Shido threatened Akechi tbh
Well yeah, though it’s more solidifying the matter of ‘cannot go behind his back even to the police in his own time’, because Shido has control over such authorities. Stalling or defying to his face/on the phone is dangerous enough, but it’s the fact that even outside of this the kid doesn’t have a dog’s chance.
I feel like this only increases how suspicious his offscreen soap opera “death” was.
Akechi had no way of knowing who would take over Shido’s machine if the Phantom Thieves suceeded, and whether they had instructions to deal with him. It would make sense for him to take advantage of a situation allowing him to fake his death.
The only people he could have turned to for help agains the conspiracy were Sae and the Thieves, and they weren’t available for obvious reasons.
True. He also shows severe issues with trust and even at the end, only barely comes to understand his own feelings, let alone the Thieves. So he’s.. understandably not quick to jump to them for help throughout the whole game, and even at the end, prefers to handle himself on his own (akin to wrestling his own demons).
Hell, he would even confirm with Joker and satisfy himself that Shido was going to be taken care of – even if they were going to do it anyway – and likely figure out what to do from there, should he survive.
I do wonder if he knew he would make it out or not though…
He’s been in the Metaverse much longer than any of them, is a lone
wolfcrow, and berserk power being like a drug to his system. He’s probably been booted out a fair few times due to carelessness, especially in the early days (though later on he couldn’t risk this happening publicly, lest some.. weird fuckin rumours arise). That being said.. he took a pretty violent beating and even remained. He may have been unsure of what would happen then..

One of the most fascinating things about Ging is that 4chan is much more willing to explicitly agree that Ging is a shitty dad than they are with Endeavour. Might just be that BNHA is so wildly popular, but I used to just go in HxH and BNHA threads and you know, every week people would be defending Endeavour and crowing about how they hoped Endeavour got the best arc ever because “SJWs” but you pop into the other thread and they’d be like ‘GING I like him but what a DICK he pisses me off’.
Ging is… such a well written character in the narrative. Like, it’s fascinating because normally a character like him is, well, a lot of anime dads are like him. But the framing? The framing of Ging as ‘just being this normal anime dad living his life abandoning his kid’? And then the further string pulling of the narrative which ups the ante ‘this is kind of shitty isn’t it though? Isn’t this narrative kind of shitty?’ And slowly builds things up until Ging is being shitty in the same way he always was, but the stakes are higher! (Gon on his deathbed)
Fascinating. Togashi truly wrote an amazing story about a shitty dad.
