Notice, it’s since “they” were kids. Not just Harrow. Which means that it’s unlikely that Viren was the First Dark Mage (unless he made himself young again and grew older alongside Harrow as part of a bigger conspiracy, but idk about that). He was a kid the same time Harrow was a kid. They grew up together.
However, the similarities between him and the dark mage can’t be a coincidence. He’s way too powerful, his staff/sceptre looks way too similar and that butterfly draining scene was way too creepy. So I think he’s a direct descendant of the First Dark Mage, and could even be his son, if the FDM prolonged his life in a similar way, only to either be killed or imprisoned by Viren. Or killed by elves or the dragon king, prompting Viren to hate them so intensely and play a crucial role in killing Thunder
