Look, ok, I see this come up sometimes, especially now, in light of recent events, but…

Someone who intentionally pursues other legal adults because they have very youthful appearances is creepy. Their patterns of attraction are concerning. If they regularly and intentionally seek out adult partners who, uh, do not look like adults, I am… deeply uneasy, and more vigilant in watching how they interact with actual children and teenagers.

However, lots of adults do look young. I don’t think “treat them like they’re actual minors” is good advice at all. As someone who is routinely mistaken for a 15 year old boy, I do not want to be infantilized by other adults who are perfectly aware of my real age (and may even be younger than me!). Absolutely nothing makes my skin crawl more than being hit on by adults who genuinely think I’m a minor, but, just as a 12 year-old who looks 22 is still a kid, I’m… still an adult theoretically capable of having consenting adult relationships. Just. Not with those particular people.

There are lots of reasons an adult might look much younger than they are. Some people just have large, wide-spaced eyes. Trans men often do not look their ages unless they’ve been on T for years. Loads of genetic and hormonal disorders result in the retention of neotenous features well into middle age. Must these people live loveless lives until their hair turns gray, for fear that, by dating them, any potential partner is therefore a pedophile? It seems absolutely demeaning and cruel to say so, but I keep seeing people implying exactly that.

Here’s a secret about strikethrough and boldthrough.

I lived through it. You know what else I did? I stubbornly ground my heels in and stayed on Livejournal for several years

When we’re talking about it, I think everyone thinks the big scary words up there meant that like… swat teams showed up and made us delete our accounts at gunpoint or something and that’s not the case.

First of all: Let me confess: Strikethrough and boldthrough? Didn’t even effect me, or any of my communities. I was mostly into RP back then, where we had these neat little single-universe ‘’’jamjar’’’ groups of crossover hell (it was a blast! Tumblr RP can never compare.) At the time of Strikethrough and boldthrough I was one of the people who didn’t care because it didn’t concern me– though I was at the time a prolific writer of darkfic and those themes through my RP as well

But I did notice when entire tags and a few communities went under, and or stopped allowing certain kinds of content all together out of fear of being next. Sex positivity was still a burgeoning thing even then, and you were likely to get laughed out of town if you liked or focused on sex and or romantic relationships in your writing or even just– shipping in general. There was a grind to a hault of everything but the most canon, vanilia romance crap in almost all fandom circles from day one (when shipping had already been a ‘persecuted’ part of fandom)….

People who had been cool with you and your content before changed over night. Suddenly their squicks and or intellectual superiority complexes were ‘proven correct’ by staff’s actions and reports of people getting harassed, bullied, and told that they should never write another fic if all they could write about was gross gays– SKYrocketed

After a while, content became SO sterilized that interest dropped off. I wondered where everyone had went, and ended up in fandom limbo for a few years before making my first tumblr in like 2009 or 2010 or so.

Tl;dr: the death of live journal that all us old codgers are talking about did not happen overnight. It was a slow, painful, awful death of malady where your loved one forgot who you were and called you slurs before they finally died and the pain was over. Btw, you can still go make an LJ account today. Goahead if you want!

When we talk about tumblr dying it’s not about the site blipping out of existence, it’s about the fact that it’s going the exact same route as LJ. If you don’t believe me, you should look into the tags that have been completely purged (the yaoi tag for one, which I know or a FACT was mostly used by gay nsfw content artists).

This is so accurate!

It’s not that tumblr is going to completely die now. It’s that this is an early warning sign, and we still have time to duplicate content and follow people on other sites while they’re still contactable. This doesn’t need to be an insurmountable problem, but waiting it out, hoping that tumblr will get its act together will probably not work.

The moment we saw the cardboard disk in the “physical copies” should’ve been a red flag

oh dear

Waitholup, there were WHAT in the disk cases??

You know, for a minute there I thought Blizzard had conducted this year’s greatest video-game cock-up. Then Bethesda said “Hold my Nuka Cola” and started a dumpster fire.

lunacria:

In the beginning of DELTARUNE, as you may know, your Wonderful Creation is “discarded” by someone. What if I told you I could use the Power Of Language to prove who that is?

That’s a bit of a change in voice, isn’t it? One speaks in ALL CAPS, and the second speaks in proper capitalization. That seems very… intentional, doesn’t it?

Well, what if I told you that change in voice is even more distinct in Japanese?

In the Japanese version, Gaster (or, at least, a person who is presumed to be Gaster) speaks exclusively in kanji and katakana, a combination that is very odd. However, the mysterious second person speaks in kanji and hiragana, which is, well, how you would normally write. (However, it’s worth noting that in UNDERTALE, and in the “surface world” portion of DELTARUNE, kanji is used very sparingly – the game is written mostly in hiragana and katakana alone, with a few simple kanji here and there. This person’s “normal” use of kanji is actually a bit unusual in that respect.) On it’s own, this difference seems similar to the English version.

But that’s not the only difference.

See, in Japanese, Gaster uses the second-person pronoun “anata”. This is a formal pronoun, which is fitting for him, as he seems to be very polite (at least in his “survey”). However, when the second person says “your name is..” they use the much more informal pronoun “omae”.

In addition, Gaster speaks very formally and politely in general, ending a lot of sentences with “desu”, and ending all of his requests with “kudasai” (please). However, the second person speaks using informal language, for example, opting to use the informal “dekinai” rather than the formal “dekimasen”. Compare directly to Gaster, who DOES use the formal “dekimasu”.

You know who else uses the pronoun “omae” when speaking on a plain black background, using informal language, and using kanji liberally?

Chara.

This website reeks of misogyny. If you love a male villain because you want to fuck him, that’s a perfectly fine and valid reason for doing so. The gremlins on Tungle dot com can tell fairytales within the boundaries of their woke wokey clique, but I can assure you that nobody has ever accomplished anything on a social and political level going after the teenager that wants to smooch Kylo Ren or the grown ass woman that daydreams doing kinky shit with Tom Hiddleston dressed up as Loki. The Revolution of 1917 would have probably gone in a different way if Lenin had spent most of his energy telling women that lusting after Anatole Kuragin is wrong. This is not an opinion but a fact.

Of course, nobody here would ever openly admit that they’re stanning a male villain because they find him sexually attractive, but it’s okay to say it without any shame. “This villain is an evil hot mess and I want to ride his dick into oblivion.” 💦

But yeah the misogyny on here is so disgusting. If a guy said he loved a female villain because he wanted to fuck her, no one would bat an eye.

This is true, but it’s also important to acknowledge that the act of reducing women’s interests down to just being horny is misogynistic in and of itself, and that’s the impetus behind, “They just want to fuck Kylo/Loki/[insert villainous or morally gray character of your choice here]!!” to begin with. It’s literally the exact same thing as some douchebag talking about how boy bands are only popular because because they “make pussies wet”, or the hyper-focus on criticizing pop entertainment targeted towards women as damaging (because, you know, women are too blinded by a hot guy character to think critically about anything they consume): a tactic to dismiss women and the things they like as worthless and shallow.

So, yeah, like your fave villain because they’re hot! Like your OTP because you want to see them make-out! But people saying, idk, “Gross women only like this bad, problematic slash ship because they want to see dicks touch,” isn’t just misogynistic because of the “female sexuality = bad” message it contains; it’s misogynistic because it strips their interests of all complexity and depth as a tactic to invalidate them (and imply their moral impurity, too).
